Effectively Lazy
Years ago, shortly after I was hired on with my present employer, I found myself in my managers office talking about career development stuff. She brought up all the things I was doing to improve the terrible and idiotic processes that existed within the group prior to my arrival and asked if it was something I was interested in doing.
“I’m lazy — I don’t like doing work. Anything I can do to make my work suck less is important to me.”
After a few moments she clarified “You mean, you’re lazy when the computer can do it for you, right?” Not wanting to get into the nuances of “I’m lazy” I agreed and life went on.
Today in a project meeting one of the business managers jokingly asked if we were trying to make more work for one of the guys that arrived late. I remarked “nah, he’s too smart to let it become more work.”
“Oh, so he’s effectively lazy.”
And that’s the story behind why I ordered new business cards with “Effectively Lazy” as my new job title.
