Grandma Lansie called to tell me about the Tournament of Roses Parade and to make me aware of the Palm Springs float. And the weather. And to tell me about the marching bands. And that I should watch the rerun of the parade. And to express, in her own way, disappointment that I was still sleeping.
The voice mail is a minute long.
I saved it. You know, for posterity.
It is the epitome of a typical conversation with my grandma. Meandering and eclectic with at least one admonishment.
I was going to share it. It was going to be an inside joke with my close family: “here’s grandma Lansie going on and on about the rose parade. Ha ha!”
I didn’t share the voice mail. It didn’t turn into an inside joke.
She was dead 3 and a half weeks later.
No, I hold on to it. I wake up on January 1 and turn on the Rose Parade. And I watch for the Palm Springs float.
Have a safe 2011.
